Choosing a flood contractor

Cumbria County Council Trading Standards Service is warning householders in the Millom area to be aware of potential unscrupulous traders offering services following the weekend floods. This may be building or insurance management companies who appear unannounced without prior appointment.

We believe that asking a few simple questions up front before any products are purchased or agreements made could minimise any potential inconvenience and unnecessary expense in the future.

When choosing a contractor, a few fundamental questions we suggest include:

  1. 1.       Can the Contractor provide ID and a verification telephone number to their head office?
  2. 2.       Can they explain who’s instructed them to call at the property?
  3. 3.       Is the contractor accredited through a certified scheme, such as a CHAS accreditation?
  4. 4.       Do they hold the necessary liability insurances to work on your home?
  5. 5.       Can they provide testimonials/recommendations from previous projects?
  6. 6.       Does the product they intend to use have a reliability track record?
  7. 7.       If you’re beginning to consider various flood mitigation measures, ensure you use products that have been Kitemark certified, rigorously tested and carry guarantees.
